History of the club
The Beginning Of Nantymoel Boys & Girls Club
The Ocean Coal Company
Prior to march 1922 the ocean coal company decided to introduce a scheme which was known as Ocean Welfare Scheme. This scheme covered the coal fields owned by the company and was intended to provide families in these areas with opportunities through the provision of recreational activities. After that date the scheme was remodelled and became known as the Ocean Area Recreation Union (OARU) . The company provided considerable support for his venture in the form of funding and provision of the land and accommodation. It financed a full time organizer, who operated from offices owned by the company, promised ongoing support funding with out which the scheme could never have survived.
A formal organization was set up, which was an affiliation of district recreation associations, to operate the scheme's policy which broadly covered funding, recreation grounds, competitions education and activities. Annual reports would have produced summarizing the progress made and Ocean Area Magazine was initiated to inform the public of its activities
The Annual report of the OARU 1922-1923 shows that the president was David Davies Llandinam MP with a number of Vice Presidents and Trustees from the region. A central Executive committee was established with the Nantymoel representatives being Ben Rees M.E, D.C and J. Meredith Jones D.C. The three sub committee for finance and general purpose, Recreation Grounds, Activities and competitions were also formed. Local Associations from Blaengarw, Blaengwyfi, Nantymoel, Ton-Pentre and district, Treharris and District. Treorchy and Cwmparc District and Ynysybwl became affiliated associations. The secretary and organiser for the OARU was Capt J. Glynn-Jones M.C. This report reveals that a scheme to build Nantymoel Boys Club was approved.
The Boys Club
We have seen that the OARU agreed to establish a boys club in its report for 1922, also that the Nantymoel Recreation Association was the umbrella under which the boys club would be governed. At its meeting on July 27th 1923 the committee decided only boys aged 14 to 19 years would be allowed as members. For sons of miners the weekly contribution was set at 2d and for outsiders 3d.
Over the ensuing years the club developed and became a place where boys could participate in a wide rang of activities. There were many successes in terms of competitions and international representation which we plan to explore. For many of the boys the MEM (Nantymoel Boys Club) was a second home and many hours of pleasure were derived from being a member of that wonderful place. The local community also benefited from having the Mem not least of which was the Saturday night dance.
